Communicating With The Deaf Without Needing To Sign

March 29th, 2012

You might not know this, but just because a person can’t hear you doesn’t mean communication is off limits and, surprisingly enough, you may not even need to know how to sign whenever you approach a person suffering from hearing loss. This is because many people who have lost their hearing have learned to compensate and get on with their lives through signing and reading lips. All you need to do is face the person you intend to speak with and communicate calmly and clearly what it is you would like to say. Don’t shout since such action would be considered rude and don’t get frustrated.

You can also utilize writing implements and gesticulate to further drive home your point, but don’t overuse gestures or you run the risk of being insulting. And, whatever you do, if you decide to use an interpreter, make sure you face the person you are speaking to. You are having a conversation with this person suffering from hearing loss, not the interpreter. If you can remember these tips then you should have no problem breaking the ice with anyone suffering from hearing loss, whether it’s about eBay, Amazon.com, the news, the weather, http://www.energysavings.com, life insurance, or what have you.
